I was at a pastors’ conference at Hobby Lobby headquarters this week, where David Green, the founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby, shared what he believes is the secret to success in both business and life: “Inquire of the Lord in everything.”

He pointed out that one of the problems many of us have is that we primarily rely on our own wisdom, our friends, or our own insight when making decisions.

Instead, we are called to pray without ceasing and ask God about everything.

Throughout the Old Testament, you’ll find passages that say someone “did not inquire of God.” And so often, what follows that statement is a story of things going terribly wrong.

But Scripture also tells us to seek wise counsel. Proverbs tells us that “with many advisers, plans succeed.” When we are facing an issue, we should seek out people who have wisdom, experience, and a strong relationship with God.

For example, if you’re having a marriage issue, seek counsel from someone whose marriage is healthy and honoring to God. If you’re facing a financial decision, talk to someone who handles finances wisely and in a way that honors God.

I was so convicted by this.

How often do I make decisions based on a hunch or what I think is the right thing to do without first asking God for His wisdom and direction? And how often do I make those decisions without seeking wise, godly counsel?

So, whether you’re facing a small decision or a life-changing one, commit it to God in prayer and seek wise counsel. Don’t simply trust your own understanding. Ask God what He wants you to do and invite Him into every decision.

Action Item

Ask yourself: What decisions am I facing right now?

Maybe it’s something related to your work, children, marriage, extended family, finances, or another area of your life.

Take some time today to specifically bring those decisions before God. Ask Him for wisdom, direction, and clarity about what decision to make and what steps to take.

Don’t just make the decision. Inquire of God.
