In this episode, Brad and Grace Marriage team member Jeremy Bennett tackle one of the most common reasons couples and churches fail to invest in marriage: busyness. They make the case that being too busy is never really the issue — it’s a priority problem — and challenge both couples and church leaders to stop letting the urgent crowd out the most important relationship in their lives.

Everyone is busy. That’s not just a season of life. That’s life.
If you’re waiting for things to slow down before you invest in your marriage, you’ll probably be waiting forever. When the kids are little, you think it’ll get easier once they’re older. Then they’re teenagers, and life somehow gets even busier. After they leave home, other commitments fill the space. The details change, but busy never really goes away.
The issue isn’t whether you have time. The issue is what you choose to do with the time you have.
The Lie That Marriage Just Works
Here’s something I’ve noticed. Most parents wouldn’t dream of missing their child’s ballgame, recital, or school event. But they’ll cancel a marriage conference, skip counseling, or put off a date night without thinking twice.
Somewhere along the way, we accepted the idea that kids need intentional investment, but marriage should somehow take care of itself. It doesn’t.
A marriage doesn’t stay healthy on autopilot. It either grows or it slowly drifts. Most couples don’t wake up one day and decide to become distant. It happens a little at a time…..small compromises, postponed conversations, busy schedules, and months of assuming there’s always next week.
Eventually, what they call “normal” is really just surviving. Healthy marriages don’t happen by accident. They grow because two people keep choosing each other. But…here’s something beautiful…when your marriage is healthy, everyone around you benefits. Your home feels different. Your kids notice it. You carry more peace into every other part of your life.
The Urgent Will Always Show Up
There will always be another project.
The yard needs work. The car needs an oil change. Emails pile up. The house needs cleaning. The list never ends. And yep, you’ll probably leave this world with things still unchecked on your to-do list.
So decide now that your marriage won’t always be the thing that gets pushed to tomorrow. Put time together on the calendar. Protect it like you would a doctor’s appointment or an important meeting. When something else comes up—and it will—don’t immediately sacrifice your marriage.
If everything is allowed to interrupt it, then it was never really a priority.
Being Together Isn’t the Same as Connecting
For couples in a quieter season of life, the challenge often looks different. You’re home together more, but that doesn’t automatically mean you’re connecting. You can spend an entire evening in the same house while one person scrolls on a phone, the other watches television, dinner comes and goes, and suddenly it’s bedtime.
You were together, but you never really met. Real investment is intentional. It looks like conversations that aren’t rushed. Trying something new together. Laughing. Dreaming. Praying. Going for a walk. Sharing a meal without distractions.
Connection doesn’t happen because you’re in the same room. It happens because you’re choosing to engage with each other.
What Kind of Culture Are You Building?
Every couple is shaping the culture of their home. When we keep putting our marriage at the bottom of the list, we’re teaching ourselves and our children that every other responsibility deserves our best, while our spouse gets whatever is left.
But every time you protect time together, keep the date night, attend the conference, or choose the conversation instead of another distraction, you’re making a different statement. You’re saying, “Our marriage matters.”
That decision doesn’t just strengthen your relationship. It changes the atmosphere of your home.
You don’t have to wait until life slows down. You don’t have to wait until the kids are older. You don’t have to wait until next year.
You can decide today that your marriage won’t get the leftovers anymore. And here’s something I’ve never heard anyone say after intentionally investing in their marriage: “I wish we hadn’t done that.”
