I have a bit of history when it comes to washing clothes in our family.
One time, I turned a load that was mostly whites into a load that was mostly light pinks. Another time, I forgot an ink pen in my pocket and ended up with ink marks across an entire load of clothes. Amazingly, that same pen even transformed the inside of our washer into what could only be described as a piece of modern art.

As frustrating as those laundry mishaps were, they taught me an important spiritual principle: what we surround ourselves with has a way of rubbing off on us.

Just as one red shirt or a cheap pen affected an entire load of laundry, the people we spend time with inevitably influence us. Their habits, attitudes, values, and character tend to “bleed over” into our own lives—whether we realize it or not.

Scripture reminds us of this truth: “Bad company corrupts good character.” You may have also heard it said this way: “You will become who you hang around.”

So, if you want to become a great spouse, spend time with someone who is already a great spouse. If you want to grow in your walk with Christ, intentionally invest time with someone who walks closely with Jesus.

This principle applies to every area of life. If you want to grow in wisdom in business, surround yourself with people who demonstrate wisdom and integrity in business. Growth rarely happens in isolation it happens in proximity.

Action Step

Take a moment to reflect on the area (or areas) of your life where you most want to grow. Now think about someone you know who is wise, healthy, or flourishing in that area. Create a simple plan to spend regular time with them. Before you meet, prepare a few intentional questions you’d like to ask.

Growth, much like laundry, is deeply affected by what and who we put in the wash.
